Volunteering Roles

The key aim of the Society is to ‘Keep the Canal Alive’ so as to maintain and protect our canal for future generations, and we cannot do this without the support of our volunteers.

We have a whole variety of volunteering opportunities, some of which involve specialist skills, where we urgently need help. These roles are flexible and can range from a few hours a week working from home to being involved in projects, committees and organising events. Volunteering with the Society is highly rewarding in terms of helping protect our canal and is also great fun working as part of a team. Undertaking some of our more specialist volunteer roles provides the opportunity to use your existing knowledge and skills and can also provide useful work experience for students.

The existing Chair will retire later this year and we are looking for an individual to lead the work of the Society and chair its Executive Committee, the key requirements being to:

  • Lead the executive team in developing and delivering the Society’s vision and strategy
  • Ensure the appropriate executive team is in place and carrying out the required duties
  • Represent the Society at key stakeholder meetings, including the managing authority and County Councils.
  • Discharge legal and regulatory requirements As a guide you would need to spend the equivalent of at least one day a week to undertake this important, interesting and rewarding role.

Press, Media and Marketing

We must continue to raise the profile of the Canal and support Fundraising and individual activities eg trip boats. To help us do this we need more support from people with marketing, promotional, media and press liaison skills and ideas, together with experience of writing press releases. It is great fun and very rewarding.

It is critical that we increase our income through donations, increased membership, grants, lottery funding and building links with local businesses. We are building a team to support fundraising and welcome help from anyone with an interest and/or experience in this area.

Web Site Support

We are revamping our web site and are looking for a couple of volunteers to assist with the new site:

  • a role helping with content management and generating engagement with canal users and local communities through the site. A background in web site management would help but not critical
  • an admin role to help fulfil online sales

Help in building links with local clubs and societies

We particularly want to build stronger links with the various clubs along the canal this ranging from say canoe clubs and fishing to local U3As, etc. Please get in touch if you are interested in helping us in this initiative

Building links with business

There is a real opportunity to involve local businesses in supporting the Canal with a benefit to all concerned. This is ideal for anyone who has had previous experience of working with corporates and building relationships

Building links with local councils

The Society works closely with both the County Councils (Surrey & Hampshire), owners of the Canal, and other local councils, to help them get the best use out of the Canal for both residents and users of this wonderful asset. We have a team already linked into the councils via the managing agents, the Basingstoke Canal Authority (BCA) but there is always more to do – so please call us if you have experience in working with local councils.

Canal Champions in local areas

We want to increase the profile and involvement of local communities with the Canal in particular in the Mytchett, Ash, Fleet, Odiham and Basingstoke areas. To do this we are keen to find people to help coordinate activities going on locally in their area, e.g. events, local groups, social media, local press, etc. Contact us to find out more.

Help in recruiting and supporting Volunteers

We have over 250 volunteers on the canal and a regular flow of new people.  However this brings its own challenges and we need support in ensuring we have appropriate volunteer policies in place both for new volunteers and to help keep in touch and support existing volunteers. If you have HR or some form of recruitment experience and are interested in finding out more please contact us.

Organising and supporting Events

To help raise the profile of the Canal we are increasing the number of local events. We have a small team at present but need more help. This can be very flexible, just helping out at one or two events, but if you have interest in meeting people and helping the Canal please get in touch.

Boat Engineer

We need an engineer to help lead the maintenance of our 50 passenger diesel trip boat John Pinkerton II trip boat moored at Odiham. This involves working with the current team, and includes planning and organisation, maintenance (day to day and winter checks), and ensuring compliance with regulatory procedures.

Various administrative support

We have a range of administrative roles in support of our Company Secretary and working with our Fundraising, Marketing and Lobbying teams.  These roles would particularly suit someone who prefers to work ‘behind the scenes’ in their own time.

The above are just some of the roles where you could help, but there are lots of other opportunities where you could be involved.  So please call 07850 652769 or email volunteer@basingstoke-canal.org.uk to find out more.
